As we navigate the many resources, and read articles from some of the most knowledgeable woodworkers around, every now and then you hear something that is just sublime in it's simplicity.
I recently ordered some replacement plane irons from Ron Hock, and while researching the subject of steel and it's properties, so I could select the correct type for my hand planes I ran across a You Tube video of Mr. Hock. He was explaining his blades and their properties, and then he said this. " A plane is just a blade holder". Revelation!
Not really a revelation, as I recently gave a partial thumbs up review of a medium priced hand plane line the Anant premium. What Ron is saying is something I have been trying to convey to people for several months now, if you find a plane body with good bones, a good quality blade will make it a very good user.
Hand planes are essential tools to have, and we will discuss tearing down and setting them up in future posts, so stay tuned.
